UK Preemies to Benefit from STAND UP for Tiny Lives Campaign
Prematurity is a global problem, and a UK group is fighting to raise prematurity awareness by urging their government to acknowledge the real scale of the prematurity problem and focus on medical research to help more babies make it to term. The STAND UP for Tiny Lives Campaign, spearheaded by the UK charity Action Medical Research, is based on the belief that more research can help tackle the problem of prematurity by reducing the rate of preterm birth.
One of their goals is to commission a Premature Birth Inquiry to develop a national research strategy which will work on identifying causes and preventive treatments targeted at eliminating preterm birth, rather than continuing to focus most of their country’s research dollars on advancing neonatal care.
The STAND UP campaign website allows inerested parties to join the campaign giving some contact information and adding a handprint or foorprint to the site’s homepage. From their, campaign supporters are encouraged to use the site to send letters to Department of Health Minister Alan Johnson and Department of Innovation Minister John Denham. Supporters can also enter their postal code and then contact their MP to encourage them to back the initiation of the Premature Birth Enquiry.
Action Medical Research also runs the related Touching Tiny Lives Campaign, which raises funds for research into pregnancy complications and premature birth.
